“Leadership: The Skills Needed” by John R. Pratt, Saint Joseph’s College

1 credit hour

Few jobs are as dynamic and demanding as that of a long-term care administrator in today’s environment. They are expected to be leaders, both in their own organizations, and in the larger system within which they function. To do that, they must possess a variety of leadership skills. Whether one is a relative newcomer to long-term care administration or a seasoned veteran, an effective leader must understand what those skills are and how they can best be used.

There is much written about leadership and one can find any number of seminars, conferences and educational programs dealing with the subject. However, they tend to be somewhat generic. This course discusses leadership from the point of view of long-term care administrators. It identifies the components of leadership and the skills associated with leadership in a management role. It also addresses how to acquire or enhance those skills.

The National Center for Assisted Living will host this year’s NCAL Day, Sunday, October 5th in Nashville, TN as an opening event to AHCA/NCAL’s Convention & Expo.

This special day will focus on staff recruitment and retention, staff orientation, and professional development opportunities for staff at all levels within assisted living facilities. NCAL will also host a concurrent NCAL Day educational track on October 5 featuring the challenging “Top Gun” leadership program. “Top Gun” is a four-hour session that leads teams of three people each through the different phases of turning around a poor performing assisted living community.
